Chapter Thirteen

Alice

I perk up at the sound of distant gunfire. Daniel is beside me, sipping on a small cup of espresso that he made for himself. He made me one too, but I downed it in an instant. I’m not much of a sipper. Maybe that says something about me.

Daniel looks over at me at the sound of the gunfire, a knowing look in his eyes. We’re watching some odd Russian show with English subtitles, but I’ve completely lost interest in it. I’ve been messing around on my phone for the past half-hour before the gunshots began.

“I think I’m going to go pee,” I say, springing up from my seat.

Daniel rises with me. “I don’t want you running off again.”

“I’m not,” I say, but that’s a blatant lie. The gunshots have my interest, and I want to go out and investigate them. I feel that it’s my duty to do so.

Daniel sighs, laying a hand over the rifle hanging from his chest. He drums his thick fingers on the black metal. “Zane isn’t going to be happy if I let you slip away again. He’s was very upset with me last time.”

“He won’t be upset with you because I’m not slipping out,” I reply, sticking to my lie.

“Well, it’s my job to escort you to the bathroom. So, if you really have to go, then I’m afraid I have to come with you,” he says.

“Not inside the bathroom, though. It’s right down the hall,” I say, taking a step back toward the door.

“I’m afraid I’ll have to wait outside the door,” Daniel says, tilting his head to the side and squinting at me.

“I don’t really feel comfortable with that,” I reply.

“Zane will literally kill me if I let you out of the house. It’s not like I’m going to be listening in on you. I just have to make sure you’re safe.”

“Good thing you don’t have to worry about that,” I reply, flashing him a winning smile.

“Yes, because I’ll be right outside the door, waiting for you,” he says.

“Kind of creepy,” I reply, inching toward the doorway.

“Not really,” he replies, leaning down to put his cup of coffee on the table.

I see my chance to flee and I take it, lurching through the doorway using my hands to propel me from the doorframe. I race down the hall, my bare feet making heavy thuds against the carpet. I use my shoulder to slam open the back door.

During my brief conversation with Daniel, I already had time to plan my escape. There’s a large green garbage bin that will allow me to get onto the roof. From there, I can run over to the front of the house and steal one of the cars in the driveway, provided Zane still keeps the keys tucked in the sun visor. I advised him not to do that, but I wouldn’t complain about it now.

Getting onto the garbage bin takes only a moment, and I kick it over once I’m on the roof. Daniel still hasn’t made an appearance outside.
